To All Members of Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation,
I am writing to provide our membership with a meaningful update on the work that has taken place throughout the month of January and to share the direction we are taking as a Nation moving forward.
January has been a foundational month. Much of the work undertaken has focused on rebuilding strong frameworks—governance, financial, legal, and cultural—that are necessary to reignite the original spirit and intent of our Nation. Central to this work is a deliberate return to our Traditional Laws and inherent responsibilities as the Riding Mountain People. This is not symbolic work; it is structural work meant to guide how we govern, protect our lands, and care for future generations.
A significant priority this month has been stabilizing and restoring our financial systems. It became clear that many Indigenous Services Canada financial reports, audits, and departmental submissions were overdue. Leadership made the decision to prioritize these matters immediately. Work is now underway to bring all reporting up to date so that departments can return to good standing and ensure continued access to annual funding and operational support. This work is detailed, time-sensitive, and essential to the Nation’s ability to function effectively.
At the same time, leadership has been developing the necessary legal and governance frameworks to properly identify, mark, and assert our interests in lands of cultural and historical importance—particularly within Riding Mountain National Park. These efforts are being approached carefully and respectfully, grounded in our Traditional Laws while also aligning with contemporary legal processes. Our intent is to protect what has always been ours and to do so in a way that is clear, documented, and enduring.
Much of this work happens behind the scenes before visible change can occur. It requires patience, discipline, and a willingness to do things properly rather than quickly. I want our members to know that these careful steps are being taken with integrity, purpose, and long-term vision in mind.
As we move into February, the focus will be on continuing this foundational work—finalizing reports, strengthening governance structures, and advancing our traditional authority in a way that honors our ancestors and safeguards our children’s future.
Thank you to our members for your continued patience, trust, and support as we rebuild with intention.
